It is endemic to northwestern Australia, where it occurs in deeper waters (125–229 m) than its closest relative, H. zebra, which ranges from northern Australia to Japan.<ref name=":0">[https://doi.org/10.3390/d15070849 Species in Disguise: A New Species of Hornshark from Northern Australia (Heterodontiformes: Heterodontidae)]</ref> The species was formally described in 2023 by Last, White and Mollen, based on molecular and morphological differences from H. zebra.
